Almaty citizens to be able to track free parking spaces

A pilot project to introduce a monitoring and analytics system in paid parking areas of the city was completed in Almaty. The system is developed by the Kazakh startup company IziGo, receives information from Cisco video cameras and with the help of computer vision algorithms allows to detect, analyze and warn car owners about the availability of free parking places. Within the pilot, the technical architecture of the project and computer vision software have been developed to determine the available parking spaces from the image. All components of the system were installed on the pilot site on the corner of Nazarbayev Street and Satpayeva Street (parking for 30 seats). According to the system from August 1, 2018 to July 20, 2019, the average load of parking spaces was 55%, each car on average spent 28 minutes in the parking lot, 12 cars parked in violation of the rules.

In the future, the system will be integrated into Cisco 's Smart City Cisco Kinetic solution. The plans also include the creation of a simple user interface to inform motors about the availability of parking spaces and the expansion of the geography of automated parking.

The international practice of digitalizing urban infrastructure management shows that automation of parking and paid parking is one of the areas with the highest return on investment. In addition, according to various estimates, the search for free parking spaces creates 20% to 40% of traffic on the central streets of large cities, respectively, monitoring and transmitting data on free parking spaces in real time positively affects the average flow rate. Almaty has already introduced paid parking in the city center, and automation of tracking of free parking spaces could increase the value of this service for drivers.
