71-year-old Peter Maggs because of a cancer tumor had to remove half of the breast bone and three ribs, reports ABMU Health Board.

Typically, in such cases, surgeons cast a prosthesis from medical cement during surgery, but 3D printing technology made it possible to fabricate an implant of titanium alloy and to shorten the operation time by two hours. During the manufacture of the prosthesis, a computerized tomography of the thorax of Meggs was used. This is one of the first cases of printing such prostheses in Britain.

The operation lasted eight hours. According to doctors, the implant has sat perfectly, and they plan to practice such prosthetics in the future.
